- The World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) is the first expansion of the World Series of Poker in series history. In September 2007, the first WSOP championship events outside of Las Vegas, complete with bracelets, were held. The inaugural WSOPE consisted of three events held in London from September 6–17, 2007. The main event, a GBP 10,000 buy-in no-limit hold 'em tournament, was won.
- The victor receives a multi-million dollar cash prize and a bracelet, which has become the most coveted award a poker player can win. The winner of the World Series of Poker Main Event is considered to be the World Champion of Poker. Since 1971, all WSOP events have been tournaments with cash prizes. In 1973, a five-card stud event was added.
With 8,569 players and a prize pool of over $80.5 million, the 2019 main event is the second-largest in World Series of Poker history. The sheer numbers make it unlikely that even the best, most well-known professional players will reach the final table, and that was the case again this year.

After three full days of play, the 2018 World Series of Poker $10,000 buy-in main event has narrowed the second-largest field in the tournament’s history (7,874 entries) down to just 1,182 remaining players. At around 12:30 AM local time the money bubble burst. With the elimination of Matthew Hopkins, the remaining top 1,182 finishers all locked up at least a $15,000 payday in this year’s world championship. Of course, they all still have their eyes on the championship bracelet and the top prize of $8,800,000.
Hopkins was eliminated when moved all-in over the top of Bryce McVay’s 15,000 raise from middle position. Hopkins jammed for 49,000 with the A5 and McVay called with the AQ. McVay was in a dominant position heading into the flop, and the board ran out 10862A to put an end to hand-for-hand play. Although he was knocked out on the bubble, Hopkins did not leave empty-handed. The WSOP gave him a consolation prize: a seat into the 2019 main event.
When the dust settled In Sun Geoum was the chip leader with 1,696,000. Other top stacks include Frankie Flowers (1,624,000), Samuel Bernabeu (1,418,000), Michael Lavenburg (1,356,000) and Julius Malzanini (1,292,000).
A number of the biggest names in the game are still in with plenty of chips, including a pair of two-time bracelet winners in Eric Froelich (1,235,000) and Ben Yu (1,040,000), online tournament poker’s biggest winner Chris Moorman (969,000), three-time World Poker Tour main event winner Chino Rheem (904,000), ten-time bracelet winner Phil Ivey (827,000), Patrik Antonius (460,000) and many more.
2015 WSOP main event 29th place finisher Kelly Minkin was the last female player standing that year. She bagged up 795,000 at the end of day 3, and is looking to be the last player of any gender remaining in 2018. Card Player TV caught up with Minkin earlier in the day for a quick interview regarding her start to day 3 and more. Check out the video below:
Five former winners of the main event are still alive with a chance of becoming repeat champions. Johnny Chan (162,000) is the only player left with a shot at becoming a three-time champion in this event, having won back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988. 2010 winner Jonathan Duhamel (450,000), 2009 champ Joe Cada (211,000), 2002 winner Robert Varkonyi (181,100) and 1998 champion Scotty Nguyen (74,300) are all still in contention as well.
Some of the many notable players that failed to survive day 3 include six-time bracelet winner Chris Ferguson, Jason Koon, David Bach, Anthony Zinno, Alex Foxen, Steffen Sontheimer, Erick Lindgren, Jason Mercier, comedian Ray Romano, 2012 champion of this event Greg Merson and all-time WSOP bracelet leader Phil Hellmuth.
The ‘Poker Brat’ got the last of his stack in preflop with AK ahead of his Jans Arends’ A9. A nine spiked the river to send Hellmuth home midway through the day.
